You might expect exercising at this elite level would mean a room full of egos, but this studio is refreshingly free of the you-can’t-train-with-us vibes that too often seep into exclusive workout spaces. NASM-certified personal trainer and former professional football player Alonzo Wilson offers a taste of that experience through his studio Tone House. I was invited to take a 45-minute class taught by Wilson — Tone House's founder and director of training — sponsored by watchmakers G-Shock.

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS LEVEL?

Those in New York City don’t have to look much further than Tone House. There were both subtle and impactful branding touchpoints throughout the studio. The studio had an impressive amount of different training tools, with plenty for everyone in the class. Our STRENGTH program will definitely make you stronger on it’s own, but will be more effective when paired with our Conditioning sessions. The best formula for becoming a well balanced Athlete is the 360 approach of Strength, Conditioning, Nutrition & Recovery.

I’m new to lifting. Can I still do Strength?

If Tone House is one of several workouts you plan on participating in that day, we highly recommend that you make it the first one. There’s a slim chance you will be able to give 100% effort if you just ran six miles and lifted weights earlier that day, nor is it safe. Be aware of how your body responds to workouts proceeding Tone House as well.

Please inform your Coach at the beginning of each training session about any limitations you have and we’ll proceed and modify accordingly. At the end of the month you’ll get a chance to perform one rep at the heaviest load (1 rep max) you can safely attempt that day. We will test your bench press, squat, and deadlift 1 rep max throughout the year. STRENGTH and CONDITIONING go hand in hand in high performance athletic training. Different from many other fitness studios, Tone House doesn’t market its sessions as the only workout you need (although they certainly could be).

Next we took high knees (or as high as I could get them) between the cushions, sprinted to the lone cushion, and circled back to the start. The lounge area was particularly sleek and comfortable with spacious changing rooms rounding off an impressive space. I opted to go on my knees for the song, and that was a great decision for me to protect my lower back as we held the down of the push-up until the song said up again. Once the song was over, we did a few core-burning exercises and a final stretch. Once we stood from our stretch, we gathered in a circle to cheer once more together. Similarly, many of the exercises are done in rounds, where the next group of participants can’t begin before the last group ends. This creates accountability but might be difficult for those who need a lot of modifications or breaks. Tone House provides several class levels to account for such differences, but those in between levels could encounter some discomfort in this regard. Coming into the final chunk of our workout, we were split into teams of four. Every team had to football run with their feet until they were told to do a burpee (with no jump) and run one lap back to the starting point.

Many of the workouts, even the weighted ones, were not, by default, tailored to each person’s size or strength. This created a sense of teamwork and camaraderie through the challenging class. At the beginning of every class, the coach asks the group about any injuries or discomfort and workouts can be tweaked accordingly. One of the first words that come to mind after experiencing Tone House is community. It’s clear the studio has dedicated members, many of whom have been coming to classes for years.

What makes this intense workout feel doable is the team aspect of the class. Throughout the workout, the class is a team that encourages one another to strive for their personal best without the feeling of alienating anyone for taking alternate variations. His movement training philosophy, innovative workouts, and positive energy have transformed his clients’ bodies as well their lives. If you’re training consistently in our Strength classes, you should be able to add 5-10 lbs to your starting weights at the beginning of each monthly cycle. Some athletes may be able to add more weight depending on their experience level and coach discretion. If you have little or no experience with barbell-style lifting, we recommend starting with low weights or just the barbell as you get comfortable with the movements.
